Generation Free
Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 11:22PM
There has been a generation X, generation y, generation .... I think today's generation of kids should be dubbed generation free.
There has been a lot of talk about free. I have yet to read the book. When thinking about this deeper especially relative to the work I do with kids, I have seen a pattern that troubles me. There is an entire generation of youth that have been conditioned and therby expect to receive their entertainment and in short order their products for free. Napster and the lien were the first major foray into receiving things for free. The music industry has fought primary with a campaign of fear to stem the tide but the real solution was the divery model. Everything is there for these kids - minimal to no effort is required to get information, etcetera. The next big entry is facebook. It is veritable playground for free. Free games, free music, free information, free news, and let's not forget free access. So what does this mean to the rest of the consumer world. Is the concept of free relegated to only items that can be digitized or is this something that will transcend digitization and or as madonma says enter the materi world. My feeling is that the youth have become so conditioned to receiving free stuff tha soon it will soon pervade products of all sorts. Marketer will seize upon this and will look to parley this into selling goods. What does this mean to material based product companies? What will happen to the entire supply and demand model and how will that effect profits. Like anything the model will change and will likely become harder to manage.
